Perledo and its Hamlets

Perledo (alt. mt. 395)

The Church of San Martino was built in the years 1614-1628 and the facade was completed in 1755. The tall bell tower of San Martino is attributed to Queen Teodolinda and represents one of the most important Romanesque works (XI sec.). Inside, they are preserved the "Marriage of St. Catherine" by Domenico Cadorado and "Stories of St. Martin" by Francesco Bellati (1785).

Vezio

Vezio (alt. mt. 355)

You can reach Vezio by car directly from Varenna but we suggest you to leave your car in locality "Campallo" and follow an old mule track until the hamlet of Vezio (about 20 minutes) whose reputation is closely linked to its castle (www.castellodivezio.it). Legend has it that he spent here the last years of his life the Longobard queen Teodolinda.

Before leaving Vezio, it is worth stopping to see the Church, always medieval, of San Antonio Abate (XIV sec.) which still preserves inside a fresco depicting the i SS. Giovanni Battista, Pietro and Antonio Abate.

In "Campallo" at the end of your trip you can visit the "Orrido" a gorge formed by water erosion of the river Esino. In the early twentieth century it was used by the inhabitants of Varenna as public bath.
